Ugandan music icon Joseph Mayanja, widely known as Jose Chameleone, has officially expanded his business ventures to Burundi with the launch of a new radio station in the capital, Bujumbura.

On Monday, the Ugandan hitmaker announced the opening of Chameleone FM, a music-focused radio station broadcasting on 94.9 FM. The station is expected to run strictly music programmes, targeting both Burundian listeners and audiences across the region.

“Beginning our new journey, Chameleone FM. Thank you His Excellency Gen Ndayishimiye, my Burundian brothers and sisters for welcoming us to your beautiful country,” Chameleone said in a message shared on his social media platforms.

The launch comes just weeks after the 46-year-old artiste paid a high-profile visit to Burundi, where he met President Évariste Ndayishimiye on December 15, 2025, at the Ntare Rushatsi Palace. Sources familiar with the meeting say discussions focused on Chameleone’s interest in investing in Burundi’s youth and creative industry.

During that meeting, Chameleone reportedly proposed setting up an ultra-modern music studio aimed at nurturing local talent and promoting collaboration between artists from Burundi and the wider East African region. The idea was welcomed by President Ndayishimiye.

For years, the Leone Island boss had openly talked about his dream of owning a radio station, often mentioning it in interviews. Until now, many fans considered it an ambition that might never materialize. The launch of Chameleone FM marks the realisation of that long-held dream.

Beyond music, Chameleone has in recent years shown growing interest in investing in media and creative industry projects across East Africa. He has described his move into Burundi’s media space as a way to strengthen cultural ties between Uganda and Burundi.

The announcement of Chameleone FM was warmly received by fans across the region, especially in Burundi, where the singer has enjoyed lasting popularity for many years.
