Her decision, unprecedented for an elected official here, has opened a national conversation about work, family and power.
The Bank of the Republic of Burundi (BRB) has issued a final reminder to former clients of the suspended payment institution Sama Money, urging them to recover their funds within one month or risk seeing the unclaimed balances transferred to the State Treasury.
In a public notice dated June 12, the central bank said the reimbursement process for funds held by former Sama Money customers remains ongoing. The payment service provider’s activities were suspended in November 2024, while the reimbursement programme officially began on July 9, 2025.
According to the BRB, affected individuals have one month from the publication date of the notice to submit their claims and recover any funds owed to them.
The central bank warned that any balances remaining unclaimed after the deadline will be transferred to the Public Treasury Account in accordance with existing legal and regulatory provisions.
Former Sama Money clients who have not yet collected their funds are invited to visit BRB headquarters or one of its branches on designated days, bringing their national identity card together with a photocopy of the document.
The announcement forms part of the central bank’s efforts to conclude the reimbursement process while reinforcing consumer protection within Burundi’s financial sector.
The BRB also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding users of financial services and encouraged all concerned individuals to take the necessary steps before the deadline expires.
