Vital’O humbled 5-0 by Vision FC as ten men collapse at Intwari

Burundi's most decorated club apologises to supporters after a heavy defeat on matchday five of the Primus Ligue

Vital’O FC endured one of the darkest afternoons in their recent history at the weekend, falling 5-0 to Vision FC at Intwari Stadium. The defeat, on matchday five of the 2026-27 Primus Ligue, sends Vision FC alone to the top of the table, while leaving the Mauves-Blancs searching for answers.

The scale of the loss is all the more striking given who suffered it. Vital’O are the most successful side in the history of Burundian football, with 21 league titles, the most recent in 2023-24, and 14 Burundian Cups. They arrived having avoided defeat in their completed league games so far, drawing 1-1 with Inter Star and Kayanza United and beating Ngozi City 2-1, before edging Aigle Noir 3-2.

Vision FC needed just three minutes to strike. Hussein Ibrahim broke through the Vital’O defence to open the scoring, and the visitors’ afternoon only worsened from there.

In the 36th minute, Bawili Chance Kasereka was shown a straight red card, leaving Vital’O to play almost an hour with ten men. Vision FC sensed their opportunity and pressed home the advantage before half-time. Karim Kamana doubled the lead on 43 minutes, and Amini Nshimirimana added a third in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Any hope of a second-half fightback quickly faded. Salim Ndayishimiye made it 4-0 in the 69th minute, and Abdoul Rahim Ndizeye completed the rout three minutes from time.

In the aftermath, Vital’O issued a public statement apologising to their supporters for the performance. The club appealed for unity and asked fans to continue backing the team through a difficult moment.

The statement reflects the weight of expectation that comes with the purple and white shirt. A heavy defeat would sting any club, but for a side with Vital’O’s pedigree, the manner of this one, a red card, three goals conceded before the break and no response after it, will raise questions about discipline and resilience early in the campaign.

For Vision FC, the result is a statement of intent. Thrashing the country’s most storied club, and doing so with five different scorers, signals a squad with depth as well as momentum. Sitting alone at the summit after five rounds, they have made an emphatic case to be taken seriously as title contenders.

Vital’O have little time to regroup. Their next fixture takes them away to Bumamuru FC on 11 October, a chance to show that Saturday’s collapse was an aberration rather than a warning sign.
